CLOCKWORK PHOENIX 5 stories selected for YEAR’S BEST anthologies

So this is the fun part of putting together these Clockwork Phoenix anthologies, or at least one of the most fun parts.

Two of the stories from Clockwork Phoenix 5 have been picked to reappear in “Best of the Year” anthologies.

Rich Larson‘s “Innumerable Glimmering Lights” has pulled a double whammy. His stunningly poetic tale of an octopoid alien society’s struggle with superstition will be reappearing in both Rich Horton’s The Year’s Best Science Fiction & Fantasy 2017 and Gardner Dozois’s The Year’s Best Science Fiction: Thirty-Fourth Annual Collection.

(Dozois’s anthology is not pictured in this entry because no cover mockup exists yet. I feel compelled to note, though, for gloating purposes, that Rich’s story is the first from our pages to make a Dozois antho; however, it’s not Rich’s first time getting picked by Dozois, so it’s almost as if we recruited a ringer, hee.)

And on top of that, Cassandra Khaw‘s surreal and twisted secondary world fantasy “The Games We Play” has been selected to appear in Paula Guran’s The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy & Horror 2017. Cassandra told me that this is her first “Year’s Best” appearance of any kind. Anita and I couldn’t be prouder!

Rich and Cassandra are both relatively new talents. It’s wonderful to help them take wing — this sort of thing is exactly what Clockwork Phoenix is for. I feel quite lucky that we’ve been able to hold little celebrations like this after each of the five volumes have gone out into the world.

Hopefully, we’ll have more news like this to share in 2017.
