“What Really Happened” by Bill Rutherfoord, 2008–2013, Oil on linen, 60″x72″.

Artist Bill Rutherfoord lives in Roanoke, Va., with his wife, artist Beth Shively. He earned his art degrees at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “What Really Happened,” which we are delighted to showcase as this issue’s cover art, is part of a series of huge, symbol-laden paintings created for his solo exhibition “Allegory of No Region,” which debuted in 2014 at the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke. “Allegory of No Region” has since been organized by the Taubman as a traveling exhibition, as is on view at the William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, Va., scheduled from Aug. 5 through Dec. 18, 2016.
