CLOCKWORK PHOENIX 5 Kickstarter rewards: an update

December 28th, 2015 1 Comment

Posted first here at the Clockwork Phoenix 5 Kickstarter campaign site:   Hello, Clockwork Phoenix 5 backers. I hope the winter is being kind to you.   I wanted to use this lull between Christmas and New Year’s to give all of you a more thorough update as to where things stand with the project and your rewards. We’ve spent a lot of time making books and other rewards, and very little time talking about exactly what it is we’ve

Announcing the official CLOCKWORK PHOENIX 5 table of contents

December 7th, 2015 3 Comments

I’m proud to at last officially announce the table of contents for Clockwork Phoenix 5, the latest installment in the Mythic Delirium Books anthology series devoted to genre-blurring beautiful and strange stories. With twenty tales by twenty-one authors, Clockwork Phoenix 5 is the largest volume in the series to date. The generosity of the genre community breathed life into this latest incarnation, crowdfunding the project through a successful $12,000 Kickstarter campaign.   Here are the stories, in the order selected

November MYTHIC DELIRIUM features now live + CLOCKWORK PHOENIX/MYTHIC DELIRIUM submissions update

November 3rd, 2015 No Comments

Today is Election Day here in the United States, so I’m particularly pleased at the timeliness of our featured story for November, Michael J. DeLuca’s “The Coup in Elfland.” It’s a dark, surreal political fable (or maybe unfable) written in tribute to the writings of Lord Dunsany and Miguel Ángel Asturias.   Our featured poems this month, “Artifacts” by Judith Roney (a newcomer to our pages) and “Aetiologies” by Sonya Taaffe (a longtime regular contributor, going back to our early

Quick CLOCKWORK PHOENIX 5 update: queries welcome

August 24th, 2015 No Comments

So Anita and I have gone through all of the approximately 1,350 submissions we received. I want to express my gratitude to assistant editors Catherine Reniere, Sally Brackett Roberston, and especially Sabrina West, for helping us respond to these many, many hopefuls in a reasonably timely fashion.   At this point, if you sent a story in to Clockwork Phoenix 5 and haven’t heard back, either your story has made it to the final elimination round (heh) or you slipped

A new CLOCKWORK PHOENIX rises!

May 28th, 2015 No Comments

The wonderful if rhetorically awkward thing about Kickstarter is that, to give credit where credit is due, one must say thank you to everyone at every stage in the campaign, over and over and over again.   Thank you to everyone who pledged. To everyone who raised their pledges. (Some several times!) To everyone who found themselves in tight financial spots yet still made some sacrifice for this campaign because they wanted it to succeed.   Thank you to everyone

Tanith Lee and CLOCKWORK PHOENIX

May 26th, 2015 1 Comment

This morning I learned that Tanith Lee has passed away. Tanith had stories in all four of the previous volumes of Clockwork Phoenix. As Anita put it in a metaphor I know Tanith would appreciate, she was part of the spine of Clockwork Phoenix. Tanith’s story “The Woman” was the very first story I ever accepted for Clockwork Phoenix, back when we were being published through Vera Nazarian’s Norilana Books. With its rich language, sumptuous setting, surreal atmosphere and provocative

About our exclusive limited edition books from Catherynne M. Valente and Laird Barron

May 9th, 2015 No Comments

The following entry was originally posted at the Clockwork Phoenix 5 Kickstarter:   Howdy, Clockwork Phoenix 5 backers!   Wow! We had a surge in pledges yesterday, mostly due to a batch of new people learning about the exclusive chapbooks we’re offering. (My thanks to Elizabeth McClellan, Alexandra Erin and Cat Valente herself for that!)   It made me realize that perhaps I’ve not done the clearest job of explaining exactly what those chapbooks are. But before I get to
